Diagnosing cause of corruption

I bought a new 500gb hdd in November, and after spending 2 days transferring everything between hdds, and setting up a new cfw ps3, seemed fine. Then twice in the past 2 weeks, turned my system on and was greeted by loading stopping at the Home Screen with no xmb and had to hold button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, then restart system to be greeted by file system corrupt. Hdd light was solid on when frozen on the Home Screen, but definitely wasn’t loading anything.
