noob question about hacking the PS3

hi, i am new to hacking PS3 and like many other i am waiting for the new hack
i have slim bought it in 2010 that was on 3.40 so it should be downloadable

now i am on 4.81, i heard it's safe to to update to 4.82 and can be downgrade from their, is that right?
because i have many plus game that expired or about to expired despite i extended my plus to another 2 years

so i am thinking to update and try to update the remaining time for those game and hack my PS3 from there.
